Expod

Expod

There are times when, you, like me have probably got a new computer or deleted an album off your computer and you wish you could just copy all your music back off your iPod.  Here I present Expod.

So, what is Expod? Expod is a small and free utility that you can download and install to your computer that does the reverse of iTunes.  With iTunes you can put music on your iPod and with Expod you can extract music from your iPod.

Sounds useful, huh?

How Does it Work?

On an iPod the music is stored in hidden folders, stored in folders with names like “F11”.  Within these folders is the music, also with a encoded name.  Why this is the case, I am not sure but Apple have also spilt up albums and artists and put them in all sorts of random folders.

Expod works by reading the database on your iPod and displaying the information for all your music in a window, this means you can then select what music your want to extract from your iPod and extract it onto your computer, allowing Expod to name it appropriately for you on the go.

Using Expod

Expod is really quite easy to use.  If you follow the steps below you will recover your music without any problems at all.

  1. Open Expod
  2. Connect your iPod
  3. Locate it in the sidebar if need be, then find the music you want to extract

  5. Click the extract button
  6. Decide how you want your new music to be organised.  You can see below the I ordered mine as “Artist/Album/Track Number – Track Name”.  In order to do this use the tags in the image below and use a foreword slash to represent a new folder.

Conclusion

Expod is a really nice and easy to use tool that can save you a lot of time and hassle downloading or re-ripping music if you lose some.  It is a very useful tool to keep around for such times, and one I would not hesitate is suggesting to anyone for use.

Nice App! I’ll recommend it tho those that require it. I tend to use iRip for this, only that seems to do the hard work for me and adds the music straight back into iTunes too. Not free tho.

I have not heard of iRip before, will take a look at it and possibly compare it in the next few weeks.

Hi. I just noticed that your blog looks like it has a formatting issue at the very bottom of your web page. I’m not positive if everyone is seeing this same bugginess when browsing your website? I am employing a completely different browser than most people referred to as Opera, so that is what might be causing it? I just wanted to let you know. Thanks for posting some great postings.

My mac Itunes is not recognizing my itunes account. Therefore, I cannot download a disk or buy any music. Can expod help ? Thanks

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then, yes I imagine expod could help. You should be able to download music with your iPhone or iPod Touch and then use expod to download from your device.

Having said that, if you buy anything on an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad then iTunes will ask you if you want to import this into iTunes.

If you drop me an email (see contact page) I’ll see if I can help you fix this problem.

Simply add it to iTunes and then sync your iPhone like normal.

how do you bypass itunes opening up my ipod and its music disappearing from the Expod list?

    • http://danielgroves.net Daniel Groves

Hi Felicia, You need to open iTunes and go to the preferences (Cmd+,) and then navigate to the denies tab. On this screen tick the “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically” box. After you’ve done this disconnect and re-connect your iPod if it was already plugged in and then it should work fine.
