AppFlow

Before I really get going, I would like to say now that Luke was meant to be doing this as his first article here at AppFlow, but for personal reasons, he is unable to do so.  Hopefully, he will be posting soon though.

Ok, so now we have got that out of the way, what is Things?  Things is a purpose-built GTD application.  What does GTD mean?  Getting Things Done.  It as simple as that.

So, at this point you are probably thinking what use could any application be that that?  I mean can it really help me get things done?  Well, yes they can.  They can help keep you organised.  That of course leads to being more productive.

Ok, so at this point you are probably thinking, but my Post-It notes work perfectly fine!  Your right.  They probably do.  Buts thats a little last-century isn’t it?  I mean your a Mac user, you should be keeping up with the times!

A Tour of Things

At this point, I think I should hand over to the experts and let them give you a tour around the Things interface.

What get the thumbs up?

Things has a slick interface, something that anything must have in order to win an Apple design award, like Things has.  To be honest Things really takes no getting used to, it is built as well as any of Apple’s own applications.  It is light, fast and very easy to use.

As an added bonus Things comes with a system-wide system shortcut which allows you to quickly add new Things to do.

And the thumbs down?

The thumbs down is a result of one of the biggest Thumbs-up.  The guys behind Things did not add a default Quick-Add shortcut across the system, and as a result you have to manually set these.  In order to do this go Things:Preferences, of just press “Cmd+,”.

Once you are on this screen simply click in each of the short-cut boxes and press the keys you want to be able to use for your shortcuts.  When done your window will look something like the one below.

This is the one thing that I feel Things should change.

Annoyingly, I cannot comment in the iPod Touch/iPhone application, as I do not have an iPhone or iPod Touch, but hopefully Luke will be able to do one soon.

Overall, I really do think that Things is the way forward for for GTD applications, and leave quite a benchmark to be matched in the future by other software manufacture’s.

What do you think of Things? So you know of any alternate applications?  You can download a 15-day free trail of Things from the Cultured Code website.
